Heteronyms Learning Game app for iPhone and iPad

Heteronyms are words that are spelled alike but are pronounced differently and also have distinct and separate definitions. They are often a source of great confusion for both beginning and more advanced readers. Alleviate that confusion with this set of 20 common pairs, 40 cards in all, and 40 sentence-strips showing and verbalizing the heteronym used in its correct context with correct pronunciation. Each pair of Heteronym contains colorful pictures and words. These serve as effective language stimulators while visually reinforcing sight-word-sound vocabulary.

OBJECTIVES
Understand that certain words in the English language are spelled alike, pronounced differently, and have separate definitions; the pronunciation and meaning of each can be determined through sentence or pictorial context, demonstrate ability to recognize and to pair pictured and labeled heteronyms, display ability to relate heteronyms to their proper use in sentence contexts, expand language skills through verbal and written expression, demonstrate fine motor skills by manipulating, pairing, and physically associating appropriate pictured and labeled heteronyms with sentences.

Make certain to understand that heteronyms are words like pre’sent - pre sent’, or con’test - con test’ that are spelled alike but are pronounced differently and that have separate, or different meanings. From the sentence strips select the sentences that contain the words in context, and then place each below the correct picture card, and read aloud the sentences.

Examples; bow - He made a bow to the queen. bow - The bow will look pretty on the package. close - Sue was told to close the window. close - Those houses are very close to each other. content - The can’s content is 8 ounces. do - Do is a note of music. do - The bride said, “I do.” dove - Karen dove from the highest board. dove - The dove is a symbol of peace. herb(s) - Parsley and other herbs can grow in a garden. Herb - The boy’s name is Herb. Job - Job is a man in the Bible.
